Medieval Catholic Church
In the Dark Ages many barbaric kings would battle each other often for land. But one of the similarities all the kings shared was Christianity. Christianity was the main religion of Europe. Christianity had a great impact on the Medieval world. Without Christianity the course of history and the future would be tremendously changed. This religion is what brought people together.
Monks and Monasteries- Sara S. with support from Ciara K.
When many people think of monks or Nuns they think a person dedicated to god and have a whole schedule centered around worship. This is actually a true statement about monks and Nuns. Monks, Nuns, Monasteries, and Convents all had a huge rule in Medieval society. Many Monasteries and Convents served as hospitals for the sick, guest houses for weary travelers, distribution centers for the needy, and storage facilities for food. Many Monasteries were built in remote locations where most Christians hadn't traveled before. In 520 A.D. a priest named Benedict built a Monastery in Italy. The Monks wore loose brown robes tied at the waist with a cord. Benedict then created the Benedictine rules. They were: priest could not marry, could not own goods, and had to obey their abbot. An Abbot was head or ruler of a Monastery. These Benedictine rules then influenced Three Vows that the monks had to take. They were: Vow of Poverty. This meant he had to give up all his worldly good. Vow of chastity. This meant he had to stay single. Vow of obedience. This meant he had to promise to obey the church and rules of the monastery. Monks not only were dedicated to god but they also had jobs and helped their community. Monks ran schools, copied books for those who couldn't read or write, collected and saved ancient writings from Greece and Rome, and served as scribes and advisors to local rulers. When the poor and needy would arrive at the monastery the monks would give them aid. Without monks many communities would have crumbled.
Nuns and Convents also played a role in Medieval communities. Nuns wore a gown, a veil, and a wimple. Wimples were white cloth that would wrap around the Nuns neck and face. A ruler or head of a convent was an Abbess. Most Nuns had a more active lifestyle than Monks. Nuns prayed, did spun, weaved, and taught. They taught needlework and use of herbs to noble woman. Nuns were more focused on girls and ladies rather than men.

Role of the Church in Daily Lives of People-Ciara K. with support from Sara S.
People in the Middle Ages were very religious, so their church of course was very important. But actually, their churches were much more than important, it was a major part of the way people lived their life. Everyone was constantly going to their church every day. Mass was typically held in the morning on certain days and sometimes there was one held more than once a day. Then throughout the day, people would go for other reasons, such as the poor or needy coming to get food,or other supplies, wedding ceremonies, baptism, money would be donated to the church, and some times even taxes were collected there.
The Medieval Catholic church also served as a place for other purposes such as a hotel, school, hospital, and a meeting place.Sometimes, people just went there to be at the church, and maybe just pray on their own time or if they wanted to show a connection to God. When people wanted to “speak” or have a connection with God at any time, they had to talk through the priest. This meant that people were constantly going to their church, and it was definitely a big part in their daily life.

The Pope, Politics, and Power- Lizbeth H.- support from Ryleigh M.
Have you ever thought if the medieval church was very wealthy? Have you ever thought of how the medieval church pope was elected? Well if you keep on reading I will tell you everything that you need to know about The Pope, Politics, and Power. Just let you know, this is a very interesting topic to learn about.
When the pope died, they right away tried to re-elect a new pope. It is very hard because this could take days. The cardinals lock themselves in a room for at least 15 to 20 days. It can begin no earlier than 15 days or no longer than 20 days after the pope's death. any cardinal that turns 80 before the papacy is vacated cannot take part in the election. Only the cardinals can choose the new pope.
Vatican city is the capital of the catholic church. it is home to the pop and is the worlds smallest country. if you walk around Vatican city it only take 40 minutes. Vatican city has its own government, makes own laws, and has own stamps and plates for it self. the pope has his holy chair called “The Holy See”. it is the throne for the pope and is its own legal corporate person. The holy see gives passports to Vatican people.(Vatican city also has its own website.) the only way to become a vatican is if you work for the pope or the king which the pope and the king are technically the same person. No one is born in vatican city and like I said you can only become Vatican if you work for the pope and the king.

The spread of Christianity- Ryleigh M. with support from Lizbeth H.
After the fall of Rome, Europe was a very dangerous place. People during the middle ages lived very short hard lives and believed that if they believed in Christ they would go to heaven. Christianity gave people hope. They were terrified of Hell, many pieces of art showed them what Hell looked like. They showed this art through glass windows made of many different colors. Art played a major role in Christianity and powerful images transmitted ideas and beliefs. Those ideas were spreading in christian communities and influencing many people. Christianity was part of their daily lives and was very important to them. Christianity was as powerful as the king or pope. The pope, who was the leader of the church and who was of great power, sent missionaries to spread Christianity throughout Europe. Some missionaries traveled great distances to spread Christianity into other land and for their devotion to Christianity many missionaries were named saints. One of the first missionaries to travel into northern Europe was Patrick who took it upon himself to teach Christianity in stead of being sent by a pope. In 480 C.E. the Franks conquered Gaul (now France) under the rule of Clovis. Clovis was the first Germanic ruler to convert to Christianity. When Clovis converted he earned the support of the pope, which he then was of great power. Clovis created one of the strongest kingdoms in Europe. Another ruler was Charlemagne. Charlemagne made people devote themselves to god and Christianity, as he was devoted to god and Christianity himself. If people refused to devote themselves Charlemagne would have them executed. The most powerful force to spread Christianity into northern Europe was the pope. The pope influenced many people and could even be more powerful than the king. Christianity continued to spread all over Europe because of missionaries and new Christian kingdoms. And Christianity is still among us, still to this day Christianity is a very important part of many people’s lives.
Christianity had a great impact on the Medieval World. Without Christianity the course of history and the future would be tremendously changed. This religion is what brought people together. Christianity helped Medieval times not be as dark as they could have been. If Christianity did not exist there would be more outbreaks of fighting, there would be no cathedrals or grand statues, and there might not be any hope. These things could still be happening today if christianity was lost. Christianity is an important part of our past, our present, and our future. Christianity is an important part of life.
